A1, A2 and A Licence Classes: Which Motorcycle Can You Ride?

A1, A2 and A Licence Classes: Which Motorcycle Can You Ride?

Power and displacement limits of classes M, A1, A2 and A, restricted versions and which class to start with.

One of the most important questions before buying a motorcycle is "Which bike can I ride with which licence?" In Turkey, motorcycle licences are split into four classes, M, A1, A2 and A, in parallel with European Union regulations. A bike bought without knowing your class can cause problems both legally and for safety.

Class M

Covers mopeds and scooters up to 50 cc with a limited top speed. It suits short city distances and cannot be used on the motorway. The Meltem Urban 50 falls in this class.

Class A1

Motorcycles up to 125 cc and a maximum power of 11 kW (about 15 HP). The power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.1 kW/kg. The Kuzgun N125 and Meltem Urban 125 are ridden with A1. It is the most common first step for young and new riders.

Class A2

Motorcycles with at most 35 kW (about 47 HP) and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW/kg. Many models between 250 and 500 cc are in this class: Meltem Maxi 250 and 400, Kuzgun N300 and R500. A2 is the most balanced class for gaining experience safely; many riders stay on A2 for years before moving to A.

Class A

All motorcycles without a power limit. The Kuzgun Adv 650, Roadster 900 and Touring 1200 require an A licence. The age limit for direct access is higher; after gaining experience on an A2 licence for a set period, moving up at an earlier age is possible. We recommend confirming the current age and duration conditions with your driving school.

Restricted versions

Some larger motorcycles are sold in "A2 restricted" versions with power reduced to 35 kW, and the restriction can be removed when your licence moves up. You can order this option for the Kuzgun Adv 650; the restriction is done only at the authorised workshop and recorded on the registration document.

Which class to start with?

  1. If you hold a B licence and plan city riding only, M or A1 may be enough.
  2. If you plan weekly trips and motorway use, an A2 and a 300-500 cc bike is much more suitable.
  3. Starting with a very powerful bike in the first year raises the cost of mistakes.

Tips for the exam and driving school

In the motorcycle licence exam, handling skills (slalom, figure-eight, tight-space turns) are decisive. Repeating lesson hours regularly on your own motorcycle or the school's bike raises your success. Thinking in advance about an A1 or A2 model that fits your budget makes it easier to get used to the type of bike you use at school.
