Pre-Season Motorcycle Maintenance: A 12-Step Checklist

Pre-Season Motorcycle Maintenance: A 12-Step Checklist

Battery, oil, tyres, brakes, chain and documents: check before heading out in spring.

Motorcycles waiting in the garage all winter may look ready to go with the first spring sun, but a long wait can cause hidden wear and deterioration in many parts. The 12-step checklist below is prepared to help you open the season safely.

Mechanical checks

  • 1. Battery: Measure the voltage (above 12.6 V is healthy). Charge or replace a weak battery.
  • 2. Engine oil and filter: Oil collects moisture and acid during a long wait; a start-of-season change is recommended.
  • 3. Coolant: Check the level and freezing point, and look for cracks in the hoses.
  • 4. Fuel: Old petrol goes bad; you may need to drain the tank or use fuel with a stabiliser.
  • 5. Air filter and spark plugs: Replace if dirty.

Parts that touch the road

  • 6. Tyres: Check pressure, tread depth, cracks and production date (DOT code). Tyres older than five years should be replaced.
  • 7. Brakes: Check pad thickness, disc wear and brake fluid (every two years); if the lever and pedal feel stiff, bleeding is needed.
  • 8. Chain and sprockets: Check lubrication, tension and wear; a rusted chain must be replaced.

Electrics and visibility

  • 9. Lighting: The headlight, tail light, indicators and brake lights must work.
  • 10. Mirrors and horn: Adjust and test.

Riding gear and documents

  • 11. Helmet and gear: Check the helmet interior, straps and visor; the seams of gloves and boots.
  • 12. Documents: Renew traffic insurance, comprehensive cover, inspection date and licence validity.

Tips for the first ride out

On the first ride the tyres are cold and the road may be sandy; ride cautiously for the first 15 minutes. Practising in a closed area or joining a safe-riding course helps refresh braking and cornering skills.

Long-term storage: for the end of the season

If you will not ride in winter, your first jobs are washing and lubricating the chain. Fill the tank and add fuel stabiliser, remove the battery and connect it to a smart charger, raise tyre pressure and keep the bike on its centre stand or a paddock stand. Cover it with a breathable tarp in a closed, dry, ventilated place.

Why professional service?

Tasks such as brake fluid, valve adjustment and electronic fault scanning need special equipment. The authorised service also checks the manufacturer's updates and recall lists.

If it is service time

  • If brake fluid is over two years old, it is time to change it
  • If the chain shows rust or stiffness, a set replacement is needed
  • Renew tyres that are cracked or over five years old
  • Come to the workshop if an electronic fault light is on
