Motorcycle Gear Guide: How to Choose Helmet, Jacket, Gloves and Boots

ECE 22.06 and CE EN 17092 standards, sizing and budget suggestions.

On a motorcycle, most safety comes less from the bike itself than from the equipment on the rider. In a crash, the quality of helmet, jacket, gloves and boots directly decides the severity of injury. In this article we go through certification and sizing step by step.

Helmet: the one non-negotiable item

A helmet must be ECE 22.06 certified; the new standard tests a wider variety of impact angles and speed scenarios than the earlier 22.05. A full-face helmet gives the highest protection, a flip-up is practical, and an open-face (jet) helmet can only be considered at low urban speeds. Helmet size is chosen by head circumference; a snug but non-pressing fit is correct. It must be replaced every five years or after any impact.

Jacket and trousers

The CE EN 17092 standard defines classes AAA, AA, A, B and C by abrasion resistance. AA or A is enough for daily use. Shoulder, elbow, hip and knee armour should be level 2; a back protector can be bought separately. Choose mesh for summer and waterproof layered models for winter; four-season models with removable liners suit every condition.

Gloves

The hand is the first limb to touch the ground in a fall. Use CE EN 13594 certified gloves with palm protection, knuckle armour and a wrist strap. Having two pairs, summer and winter, is practical.

Boots

The ankle is among the most commonly injured areas in motorcycle crashes. Prefer boots that support the ankle, have shin protection and are CE EN 13634 certified. The difference between trainers and boots can mean weeks of recovery time in a crash.

Visibility

Being seen in traffic is half of safety. Clothing with reflective details or bright colours improves your visibility by day too. A reflective vest can also be considered for night rides.

Budget suggestion

Set aside a budget of 25,000-45,000 TRY for a full gear package (helmet, jacket, gloves, boots). If you buy a package with the motorcycle you get 15% off and can add the cost to the loan.

Care and lifespan

Textile jackets can be washed at 30 °C on a gentle cycle; leather items are fed with a special care cream. Wash the helmet liner monthly and wipe the visor with a soft cloth. Never clean a helmet with chemical cleaners; the shell material may be damaged. Armour can harden and lose protective ability after five to seven years, so plan to renew it.

Quick shopping checklist

  • Helmet: ECE 22.06 label, correct size, under five years old
  • Jacket: CE EN 17092 AA/A, level 2 armour
  • Gloves: CE certified with palm protection
  • Boots: ankle support, CE EN 13634
